MAMA DIASPORA HITS AUTUMN WITH GOOD NEWS OF FORTHCOMING RELEASES

The summer break has not gone unnoticeable for Mama Diaspora and Extra Estrada music label. Mama Diaspora and Yuriy Gurzhy have been working hard on production of new tracks to be soon published by Extra Estrada. The new tracks are inspired by the windy snowy curly winter of Kyiv's centre, spring style of life in Kyiv and the summer lifestyle beyond the borders of  one of the oldest European capitals. Mama Diaspora's and Yuriy's album is soon to be released and will definitely become a musical event of this year. The tracks and the album are planned to be available for download as well.

Evgeniy Didyk, a master of jazzy trumpet

Evgeniy Didyk is a trumpet player with extensive experience, diverse musical interests and a solid artistic background. He is originally from Moldova, where he studied at the Chisinau musical conservatory, having graduated from a class of jazz and classical trumpet.

He went on to the professional stage early, starting to play in Kuibul musical group. In 1999 he joined famous on post-Soviet and international stage musical group Zdob si Zdub, contributing to the songs “Maria Blues” and “You left me”. Later in 1999 - 2000 he toured with the group.

In 2001 he participated in the musical album published by Zdob si Zdub, contributing to recordings of the trumpet play in the cover of the song well-known to every person on post-Soviet territory - “Having seen the night” («Видели ночь») by Kino, which appeared on “Agroromantica” album by Zdob si Zdub.

Later on he participated in concerts with various Ukrainian popular musicians, including Ruslana and Free National Band. He took part in the recording of Ruslana’s “Wild Dances” album (Eurovision song contest winner in 2005). In 2006 he recorded songs “Gare de Guer” and “Kazatchok” with the French group Red Cardell for their album “Naitre”. In the same year he also participated in the recording of one of the most interesting on the independent musical stage albums by Bacя Club - “Konokrad” (“The horse thief”), created in style of Ukrainian folk city chanson. He also closely collaborated with Ukrainian folk pop group Sontsekliosh, working on songs “Don’t cry Olena” and “Na potochku”.

From 2004 to 2010 Eugene participated in the Haydamaky musical group, working on their albums “Perverziya” (EMI, 2005), “Ukraine Calling” (Eastblock, 2005), Kobzar (EMI, 2008) and “Voo Voo i Haydamaky” (Agura, Poland, 2009). The last one receiving a platinum disk in Poland and collaborating with Karimski Club group and a Christmas musical project of Tobasco Club - Betlejemska Nowina.

Since 2010 Eugene collaborates with Mama Diaspora musical group, having played first live concert with them in March 2010.

Igor Sakach, the Rusyn heart of Mama Diaspora

Igor Sakach was born in Serbia, the province of Vojvodina, in a beautiful city of Novy Sad that lies on both sides of the Danube river. Novy Sad is also known for being the heart of Serbian culture of 19th century, being frequently called - "Serbian Athens" due to its massive influence of culture on the rest of Serbia. Spending his summers at the banks of the Lake of Ledinci in Fruška Gora and beaches Štrand in the Liman neighborhoods, near the Danube river, Igor was learning how to play accordeon at the musical school.

Later, after musical school, he started playing double bass and became a bass guitar player at the new wave band "Brojgel", which name was largely influenced by the picturesque works and the life story of Flammish 16th century painter Peter Breigel.

In 1994, Igor left Novy Sad to come to the beautiful Kyiv's banks of the river Dnipro. He was fully dedicated to learning classical music and playing double bass, becoming a student of Boguslav Soyka at the Piotr Chaykovskiy Ukrainian National Academy of Arts in Kyiv.

Since 1998, being fond of DJ'ing and electronic music, he started getting into the Kyiv's electronic music scene. He chose a pseudonim "DJ Ingvo" and started his DJ-ing career playing jazzy house, deep and funky house tracks. Later, he started collaborating with jazz musicians, including Roman Drabina (tenor saxophone) and Evgeniy Didyk (trumpet). He worked as a DJ at the "44 Club", experimenting with acid jazz grooves and from 2002 to 2006 started several projects involving Balkan music grooves, which included a collaboration on Digital Balkan with Milosh Jelich (keyboards' player from Okean Elzy) and a project "Balkan Groove System" featuring Yuliya Lord.

He also had short-term musical project with Ukrainian authentic music group Bozhychi. From 2006 to 2008 he collaborated as a keyboard player, DJ and stage producer with Stereoliza musical group. Approximately at the same time he met DJ Derbastler and since then musical experiments they had together led to creation of MAMA DIASPORA music project.

YURI GURZHY - THE VOCAL SOUL OF MAMA DIASPORA

Yuriy Gurzhy is undoubtedly one of the most well-known musicians of Ukrainian origin. At international level he is known as a prodigy musician whose talents excite wonder and admiration.

He came to Berlin’s musical scene in 1995 from Kharkiv, coming from independent non-commercial music environment. Since his arrival to Germany he participated in a variety of artistic musical projects in Germany and Europe. These projects included DJ-ing, playing and composing music. His creations were Russendisko, with a well-known writer and a close friend Vladimir Kaminer, in Berlin's Kaffee Burger. Russendisko parties started in 1999, steadily establishing itself from a local Berlin entertainment and becoming a successful and exotic, more to say – legendary, international event, known well behind Berlin and Germany, opening an avenue for Ukrainian and Russian music bands abroad. Gurzhy and Kaminer issued several compilations of Russendisko, which included rock bands known only locally, such as Lyapis Trubetskoy, Spitfire, Vasya Club, Mandry, VV, etc.
Recently Yuriy became more known as the leader for energetic ROTFRONT Emigrantski Raggamuffin Kollektiv, uniting musicians of five different nationalities. The group was started in 2003 by Yuriy and Simon Wahorn, initiator of the HungaroGroover Soundsystem. Their first album came out on Essay Records in 2009. The group was also declared to be the best world music act in Germany in 2009. The style of the group comprises of incredibly solid musical mix of ska-punk, reggae, hip-hop, klezmer, gypsy, ethnic Hungarian, Ukrainian, German and Russian grooves.
As a DJ and producer, he did remixes for such a well-known international acts as Amsterdam Klezmer Band. He also wrote songs for Shantel, that were recently released at Essay Recordings in 2009 and included at the Shantel’s albums "Disko Partizani" and “Planet Paprika”.

He worked on creating several musical compilations for such well-known labels as Trikont Records and Russendisko Records, being a director of the last one. For Trikont he did a compilation of "Funky Jewish Sounds from Around the World", named Shtetl Superstars. This CD is a soundtrack to musical life of modern klezmer bands in funky style of 70s. It has been created by Yuriy and a talented songwriter and the former trumpet player from Oi Va Voi music band Lemez Lovas. Currently, Yuriy and Lemez are working on an album of their own musical project "The Fabulous [Shtetl Superstars Orchestra]", which should be released fairly soon.

Yuriy does not want to define himself with any specific musical style as his background is a mixture of a variety of cultures of various countries and in variety of beautiful music selected with taste.

DJ Derbastler will play at MOLODOI in Strasbourg on 28 May 2010

DJ Derbastler finds his inspiration in ethno-alternative grooves, drawing from a broad collection of Ukrainian and world-famous independent artists and labels. This diverse repertoire has pleased crowds in several capitals of Europe.

Derbastler is one of the founders of the Ukrainian electronic and alternative scene. He has already been a resident DJ for many years at Ukrainian Fashion Week events and performs as a resident DJ in a number of the best Kyiv clubs.

DJ Derbastler has collaborated with numerous groups and musicians having Ukrainian and Kyiv roots. He continues this synergetic work with artists such as Foa Hoka, Mama Diaspora, Chord Snatchers, Mandry, RotFront, and Yuri Gurzhy. He has also toured as a DJ with Gogol Bordello and performed at live acts with the leader of their group, Eugene Hutz.

By bringing Derbastler to Strasbourg, MICT is broadening the horizons of the European Capital with sounds from the alternative electronic scene of Kyiv and of Ukraine.

Yuriy Gurzhy), we would like to announce a competition for Mama's dedicated fans. The title of the competition is "¿Ask Mama a question?" We would like to invite you all to put questions to the members of the Mama Diaspora and Yuriy Gurzhy on any subject of interest of yours (try to be inventive!). Гучна андеграунд-вечірка, що проходила у Sullivan Room Kiev зібрала організаторів, музикантів і просто шанувальників рок-н-ролу of the world. DJ Yuriy Gurzhy, якого вже встигли охрестити «нашою людиною з Берліна», та київський проект Mama Diaspora влаштували виступ з присмаком балагану. Популярний лондонський DJ Scratchy так професійно відіграв свій унікальний сет, що українські музиканти та діджеї стояли чи не з роззявленими ротами й округленими очима, а підривний піпл на данс-полі, ні, не стибав – витанцьовував.

Також вечірка офіційно презентувала хедлайнерів 2010 рок-фестивалю Stare Misto. До Львова 22 травня завітають Океан Ельзи із тільки-но випущеним альбомом «Dolce Vita» та Goran Bregovic зі своїм Wedding and Funeral Band. А тепер докладніше…

Sullivan Room - це брендовий клуб світового значення, філіал Нью-Йоркського клубу, так, принаймі, про себе відзиваються, але під вивіскою казино Split на Прорізній. Місце, що більше тяжіє до різноманітних андерграундно-гламурних вечірок, ніж до звичних клубних тусовок.

Отже, Юрій Гуржи(DJ Yuriy Gurzhy), один з засновників проекту Russendisko, фронтмен колективів RotFront та Shtetl Superstars Orchestra, відривався на повну, слідуючи моді вечірок ТАКОГО формату, бухаючи коньячок під час виступу-відриву. А проект Mama Diaspora підтримували своїм, авжеж живим, виконанням шаленість вечірки. По суті, народ тільки і чекав їх виступу, а що стало несподіванкою, так це виклики на біс - і де!?? На дискотеці!!! Тож під час другого кола тих же треків-пісень народ не переставав гоцати.

Розігріту живим виступом публіку продовжував розривати DJ Scratchy (Лондон) – резидент лондонського клубу Gypsy Hotel, тур-діджей команд The Clash, The Pogues та Gogol Bordello. Рівень гри на тусовках, звичайно, відповідний. Порадував не тільки рок-н-ролом та балканіцею, а й фольком. Звучала, навіть, відома без пояснень «Галю приходь» ВВ, що ще раз підтверджує "хавательність" української музики не за місцем створення, а за кордоном.

Щодо ВВ, Олег Скрипка не обминув вечірку й замалювався на самому початку, також були помічені Фома з «Мандрів», Любомир Васильєв, Лілія Пустовіт, DJ Binghi (Banda Arkan), Дмитро Герасімов (TOPORKESTRA), гурт «Перкалаба».

Рок-фестиваль Stare Misto цього року відбудеться не в червні, а в травні, таким чином, він стане першим за часом проведення українським опен-ейром....

УГОЛОК МЕЛОМАНА: «МАМА ДИАСПОРА»

ПУТЕШЕСТВУЯ С «МАМОЙ»...

... Мы маленькие дети нам хочется… (х/ф "Приключения Электроника")

Перефразируя эти слова Энтина , которые мы помним с детства, можно сказать, что нам, как БОЛЬШИМ детям очень хочется хорошей новой музыки. Такой чтобы можно было взять как книгу – раскрыть для себя и увидеть там все, чего тебе не хватало в последнее время. И потом читать и перечитывать – снова и снова, делиться с друзьями и слушать вместе – как в старые добрые времена, когда была только одна стереокассета МК60 на троих (в лучшем случае ORWO на четырех). К сожалению, в последнее время, когда мы слышим новую музыку и говорим о новых музыкальных релизах мы их зачастую делим на те, которые нам сразу стали неинтересны и поэтому мы их затерли или сознательно потеряли в багажнике чьей-то машины или на музыкальные релизы, которые мы послушаем еще  пару раз. 

Вспомните когда Вы в последний раз, Дорогой Читатель, слушали музыку «взапой» и она вам все время казалась интересной, хотелось ее прослушать еще раз, и при этом она не надоедала. Причем слушали «взапой» не альбомами целиком, а именно отдельными музыкальными треками, смакуя как хорошее грузинское вино каждый из них. Не помните? Вот. Можете завидовать мне белой завистью, я - помню. И началось все это в декабре, когда вышел первый "мини-альбом" теперь уже любимого многими музыкального проекта MAMA DIASPORA feat. Yuriy Gurzhy. 

 

С момента выхода нового EP «Мамы…» я его возил с собой везде. Забрав его с собой из Киева в декабре, после Балканфеста, и отслушав в машине с другом, мы поняли, что «это ОНО», при этом молча кивнули друг другу, символизируя одобрение и решили другой музыки в машине не ставить. Не хотелось менять нравящийся "Мамин" мелодичный приятно урчащий грув. Музыка «Мамы» и лирика Юры действительно цепляли. “Мамин” EP получил “риспект” даже от самых суровых музыкальных критиков Киева. Да и, собственно говоря, не только Киева. Но об этом мы напишем в следующем посте. 

В целом, создавалось впечатление, что «Мама Диаспора» проект, который мы знаем давно. Она, хотя и является музыкальным проэктом относительно новым, все-таки уже была известна в узких кругах ценителей жанра, который условно можно охарактеризовать как «экстра эстрада». До релиза ее мини-альбома некоторые композиции "Мамы ..." прозвучали на монстре интернет-видео Youtube, а также на творческом интернет-портале Myspace и «Мама» уже имела своего слушателя. Релиз же мини-альбома подтвердил наличие опыта и музыкальной интуиции у музыкантов, которые знают СВОЕГО слушателя. 

Мое первое настоящее музыкальное путешествие с «Мамой…» началось с зимней поездки в Ялту... Сведенные воедино с музыкой "Мамы..." звуки декабрьских волн Черного моря, играющих легкую романтическую мелодию, напоминающую о ностальгии по теплой крымской весне, эйфория декабрьской Ялты, абсолютно соответствовали всеми любимому художественному фильму АССА и чеховскому настроению Ялты в «Даме с собачкой» и  были идеальным музыкальным миксом. "Маму..." в Ялте прослушали и оценили, сами того не ожидая, посетители несколько вечерних заведений Ялты, которые с восторгом пританцовывали под песню «Back in my hometown». Полюбила "Маму" и наиболее требовательная Ялтинская аудитория - таксисты. И собственно говоря на это есть причины.

Каждый трек альбома от «Back in my hometown» до «House is burning» пронизан светлыми музыкальными ощущениями украинской городской фанк этноромантики. Вместе с музыкой эти чувства оживают и путешествуют с Вами вновь и вновь. С “Back in my hometown” хочется вернуться на школьную площадку и увидеть не тех людей, которые у тебя зарегистрированы на сайте одноклассники.ру, а тех, с которыми бы ты выкурил по сигаретке на задворках школы, поделившись своими. При этом реально обсудить насколько странно ты себя чувствуешь в городе, который ты знаешь с пеленок, но который стал другим, не таким как он был когда тебе было 15 (И это несмотря на то, что ты считаешь, что с 15 лет не изменился ты сам!). С «Secret agent» хочется перестать куда-то бежать, образумиться и наконец-то задуматься под звуки прекрасной джазовой трубы и аккордеона, для чего ты собственно говоря бежишь-то. Ну а с «Too late» задуматься - почему же она все-таки меня не дождалась? (При этом слушая «Too late» все время самому хотелось стать тем виртуальным «человечищем», играющим на клавишах на этом треке). 

Мое знакомство с «Мамой» продолжилось в Милане и на ЮБФ (Южном берегу Франции – так называемый Лазурный берег), Киеве, Германии – Кельне и Дортмунде, Франции, Австрии, Питере, и наконец-то, состоялось вживую в Киеве, в кнайп-клубе «Купидон», на Новый Год (об этом событии наш блог писал раньше – см. пост за …). Однако это было только начало. "Крылатые качели" Купидона, на которых не на шутку раскачалась «Мама…» занесли ее на Funkhaus Europa Радио в Кельне, Эти же качели забросили «Маму…» и на радиоволны Туманного Албиона, в live радиомикс украинской музыки DJ Scratchy на WirelessFM. И недавно, 5 марта этого года мы имели возможность отслушать и лицезреть "живое" выступление "Мамы" в Салливане, на Pre-Party фестиваля Stare Misto.

Знакомство с «Мамой…» не завершилось и после концерта в Салливане, в гримерке, где Мама и Scratchy, под гитару Scratchy и трубу Жени, ритмику Вани Derbastlera, вокал Гуржи и Игоря, а также при живом участии всех присутствующих в гримерке поклонников и друзей, создали незабываемую атмосферу "аквариума сплоченных вокруг музыки единомышленников". Слушая «Маму» в гримерке, и находясь в кругу людей любящих музыку и живущих ей, мне в голову не случайно пришла  мысль о том, что хочется, очень сильно хочется жить с хорошей и очень хорошей МУЗЫКОЙ, которая могла бы путешествовать по жизни с нами, ну и свою очередь, с которой могли бы путешествовать по жизни мы...
Именно поэтому мы с нетерпением ждем новых релизов и выступлений от "Мамы". ДАВАЙ "МАМА" ЗАЖИГАЙ!

Flying in from St Petersburg to Kyiv, I had an interesting conversation on the plane with a neighbour, very educated and intelligent person, on how profoundly lost the Ukrainian culture was and how deep the cultural crisis in Ukraine was. An argument from my counterpart was that there was never such a thing as Ukrainian musical culture and even if one would say that there was something in that culture - it has never produced anything interesting or arguably important. Another argument from my counterpart was that certain acts from the musical groups existing in Ukraine never had any importance on the European continent or anywhere abroad, followed world music trends, were of low quality (example of Eurovision participants) and were largely local events known only to a limited number of persons, with no major influence on music trends. Knowing a lot about Kyiv, born in Kyiv myself and being from the very childhood at the roots of underground music movement in Ukraine, I disagreed, trying not to use any “trumps” - origins and roots of such a world famous act as Gogol Bordello (I try not to use the “Gogol Bordello argument” in such conversations for many reasons).
My arguments were that the massive “pop” culture existing in Ukraine is publicly visible, but this culture is an empty soap bubble, music with no content and soul, that is rather likely to disappear soon, without any historical trace. It will disappear as a soap bubble that is not able to fly up even by itself as it can only follow the strong wind of euro-pop or Russian pop musical trends. The ideas behind it always being borrowed. Nevertheless, I mentioned that among these empty soap bubbles, appearing and disappearing almost immediately, there are "shiny pearls" in Ukrainian music that can satisfy even the most demanding and exquisite tastes of musical “gourmand” and “connoisseurs”.

My argument, which failed orally before stubborn “airplane seat neighbour”, was proven to the public attending the Stare Misto Underground Pre-Party at Sullivan’s, by DJ Scratchy, a person who definitely has a taste in music (a tour DJ for Clash, the Pogues and Gogol Bordello - http://scratchysounds.co.uk/) and who considers that there are pearls in Ukrainian music that form a part of The Rock and The Roll of The World music culture. I personally felt from his live DJ performance that he came to Ukraine not just to play the Ukrainian music he loves, but to share his admiration for this music, to get a feel of Kyiv and Ukraine “backstage”. At some point I even thought that he came to return to Kyiv as it seemed like he was always here before, so harmoniously he acted and played his music before the audience and so nicely he got in rapport with his fellow musicians from Ukraine - Yuriy and Mama Diaspora.
Another “control shot” repartee against arguments discussed with my unfortunate incidental airplane companion was performance Mama Diaspora that could have finalised the dispute and rule in my favour confirming that there are any newly emerging musical pearls in Ukraine that do not follow the “world music trends”, Russian pop music trends or anything of a kind, as my neighbour insisted, but create trends in music themselves.
Mama Diaspora project (http://www.myspace.com/mmdiaspora) is the recent collaboration of talented Kyiv musicians Mama Diaspora (Kyiv-born patriarch of the Ukrainian club scene DJ Ivan Derbastler and Igor Sakach, musician of Rusyn origin from Novy Sad, aka DJ Ingvo) and Yuriy Gurzhy (Kharkiv-born musician and DJ, a founder of Berlin-based group Rot Front and the originator and co-founder of Russendisko and Shtetl Superstars Orchestra). This collaboration until now resulted in their first EP with the same name – Mama Diaspora feat. Yuriy Gurzhy. This recording features four tracks “Back in my hometown”, “Secret agent”, “Too late” and “The House is Burning” – all of them trendy magic grooves, coupled with rhythmic jazzy sounds, simply beautiful and touchingly sharp lyrics and vocals by Yuriy Gurzhy. The live set performed by Mama Diaspora and Yuriy in Sullivan room on 5 March was different from the recording as it involved live trumpet performance by Zhenya Didyk (he originates from Moldova and used to be a part of such acts as Haydamaky and Zdobsi Zdub, he also collaborated with Ruslana recording horn sections for her).

From their solid performance, involving a mix of live dj-mixing from DJ Derbastler, guitar from Igor, trumpet from Zhenya, vocals from Yuriy Gurzhy, we saw and witnessed emergence of a new musical trend, which goes beyond any existing styles. The style that cannot be easily defined standing alone or as fitting or belonging to one of the musical categories - to ethnic dub or electronica, Balcana, Carpathian or Ukrainian music style, or even funky and groovy jazz. However, that undefined in terms magnificent mixture made my feet move and gave me that sweet soul ache that I have not experienced since I fell in love when I was 16.
One might say, why is this example at all related to the Ukrainian musical scene? The persons involved in this project are barely linked to Ukraine – one is a resident musician in Berlin, the other is of Rusyno-Serbian origin, Zhenia who played live with Mama is from Moldova? What unites them? My answer would be simple – Kyiv. And isn’t Kyiv something very Ukrainian? Isn’t it the CITY that, notwithstanding and despite any kind of attempts to destroy and ruin it and its culture, for almost two thousand years traditionally mixed, consumed and then reproduced various cultures, making them its own, distinct and profoundly original Kyiv culture? And in fact isn’t it why we all love Kyiv? Does Kyiv not resemble a magnificent old sweet granddaddy who nurtured so many wonderful musicians, poets, writers and simply great talented people from everywhere - who indeed became a part of Kyiv Diaspora?

My airplane counterpart was simply not right about Ukraine, Kyiv and its culture. Kyiv definitely resembles that gentle invisible giant whom you can feel anywhere when you are there. Kyiv is old and wise and is always right in selecting who to share its treasures with - my neighbour was not one of these persons. Kyiv continues to be discreet with nurturing its pearls and telling to strangers about them, but Mama Diaspora’s collaboration with Yuriy Gurzhy is not yet another, but one more beautiful musical pearl kindly shared with us by Papa Kyiv, which we all had an opportunity to witness and admire closely at Sullivan’s Club on 5 March 2010.
